New PC To Do List

Here are some of the files and to do list for each and every of my new PC after installation of Windows.

Most Important For Windows 8, 8.1
Ensure that dotnetframework 3.0 has been installed if not run cmd and install it from the ISO/USB.

Run CMD as Admin,

DISM /Online /Enable-Feature /FeatureName:NetFx3 /All /LimitAccess /Source:d:\sources\sxs

Change d to the source of Windows Installation.

Reason: Most of todays applications still utilizes 3.5 and below .net to function properly. Especially .msi setups from Intel/Microsoft.  

 Ensure all relevant drivers and windows are up to date.

1) Windows Update.
Windows+Q, Windows Update, Check Windows Update, Select All, Install.
It will attempt to restart once or twice, be patient.

2) Install Latest Graphic Card Drivers
Intel
Nvidia
AMD

3) Also install relevant drivers for motherboard and other hardware such as Wlan, Chipset.
Usually available from your motherboard manufacturer website.

 

Installing Applications

For Work Purposes:
1) Microsoft Office 2013/2010 =>Word,Excel,PowerPoint Only.
Doesn't matter you want to install which version as long you can do your work.  :D

2) Java (Optional)
If possible you can avoid installing this if you are not using it. I am using this to download videos from youtube and converting youtube to mp3 files. Hence I will install this program.
Keepvid.com and Snipmp3.com


3) Adobe Flash
In Windows 8.1/8 this is already installed automatically hence not needed. But do check for updates for this on their website.

4) Foxit PDF Reader/Adobe PDF Reader
Both are for reading PDF documents but personally I prefer Foxit due to its smaller footprint.

5) WinRar/7Zip

To open .rar and .zip files. If you don't mind the nagging just use WinRAR as I am sure most of us are accustomed to the layout and how it works. 7Zip also works well but I still prefer WinRAR over it.

6) F.lux

This is a must have for me and for people who stare at their desktop for long hours.  makes the color of your computer's display adapt to the time of day, warm at night and like sunlight during the day. This allow less eye strain and easier for you to sleep at night.

7) CCCP

Combined Community Codec Pack. It has all the essential and mostly used codec and isn't that big.

8) Chrome/Firefox (Optional)
Personally the IE11 works greats but sometimes I have no choice to just download other alternatives as it has some issue with flash videos online once in a while. So just as backup.

9) One Drive (Only for Win7 and Below)
If you are using Windows 8/8.1 just sign into your Microsoft account and it will automatically sync your files and data.
If not, download the One Drive setup from Microsoft. :)

This is only optional to those who uses their storage.

10) Team Viewer
One of my most favorite remote application. I use this to monitor many of my rigs and do remote diagnostic via my phone or tablet.

1) CCleaner - To Clean Unwanted Garbage
2) Defraggler- Defragging Hard Drives
3) Geek Uninstaller- Clean Uninstallation of Program
4) Crystal Disk Info- To Check Hard Drive Health
5) Crystal Disk Mark - To Test Performance of Drive
6) HW Monitor- To Monitor Temperature of Hardware
8) Space Sniffer - To Check What is eating up space on drive.
